At the OpenJS Foundation, we’re excited to announce the first project partnership with Express and HeroDevs to launch Express Never-Ending Support (NES), providing long-term support for applications built with legacy versions of Express. This initiative is part of the OpenJS Ecosystem Sustainability Program (ESP), a partner program to help secure outdated software and create new revenue streams for our projects and commercial participants.
Express.js, a widely used back-end framework for building RESTful APIs and web applications with Node.js, reached its EOL in July 2015. At OpenJS, we always encourage organizations to update to current, supported versions of open source projects. However, many organizations continue to rely on legacy versions, facing challenges with maintaining security and compatibility. Express NES addresses these issues by offering long-term security patches, compatibility updates, and expert support. Currently, Express NES supports Express 3, with plans to extend to Express 4 once its EOL is announced.
Express NES acts as a seamless drop-in replacement, enabling developers to continue using the framework without the need for costly rewrites or migrations. With the expertise of HeroDevs, it ensures long-term security, stability, and compliance for existing applications, giving developers peace of mind.
The ESP is non-exclusive for providers that can provide credible technical support to our projects. Stay tuned for more updates as OpenJS actively seeks additional partners to expand this critical initiative.
