OpenJS Foundation and Cloudflare Form Strategic Partnership to Advance Open Source Project Health

The OpenJS Foundation and Cloudflare partner to bring reliability and performance of critical JavaScript projects.

The OpenJS Foundation’s JavaScript technologies are widely used around the world, and building development infrastructure with longevity and stability remains a key function of the OpenJS Foundation. Today, we’re thrilled to announce our strategic partnership with Cloudflare to support this initiative.

Cloudflare's global high-availability infrastructure is widely recognized as an industry leader. By teaming up with the OpenJS Foundation, Cloudflare aims to provide technical support and infrastructure improvements to critical JavaScript projects hosted at the foundation, including Node.js, jQuery, Electron and NativeScript. This collaboration will help ensure the reliability and performance of critical JavaScript projects, benefiting millions of developers worldwide.

Partnership Goals

  1. Improved Performance: Cloudflare’s content delivery network (CDN) and optimization tools will enhance the performance of key projects, ensuring faster load times and better user experiences.
  2. Infrastructure Support: By leveraging Cloudflare’s infrastructure, the OpenJS Foundation can offer more robust hosting and operational support, reducing downtime and improving the reliability of their projects.
  3. Enhanced Security: By consolidating OpenJS vendors we reduce our attack surface and lower administrative burden.

Creating a Better Service Model

Our vision is to manage access to configuring the services within project accounts, and enable community members the ability to leverage Cloudflare services that are project specific. The result would be a managed and delegated service model, where the foundation manages at-large, and delegates tasks that are better suited for project contributors.

“Partnering with Cloudflare marks a significant milestone in our mission to support and sustain vital JavaScript and web technologies. Cloudflare's expertise in security and performance will be invaluable in ensuring the health and resilience of our open source projects,” said Robin Bender Ginn, Executive Director, OpenJS Foundation. “Together, we are committed to fostering a stronger, more secure, and innovative JavaScript ecosystem.”

Cloudflare Already Positively Impacting The OpenJS Community

Healthy Web Campaign

Although jQuery is used by over 90% of the world’s websites, many of them are outdated. The jQuery team recently launched healthyweb.org, to help developers understand if they are leveraging old versions. The site uses Cloudflare Workers’ Browser Rendering API, which spins up a real web browser to fetch web pages and determine which version of jQuery is being used.

Node.js Release CDN

The Node.js project relies on the Cloudflare global CDN to distribute over 1 billion downloads per year.

Electron & Protecting Resources

Electron leverages Cloudflare’s Zero Trust product to protect admin access to infrastructure resources without requiring their community to manage and use a VPN.

NativeScript & Cloudflare Workers

Nativescript uses StackBlitz and Cloudflare Workers to power their NativeScript preview tool.

Get Involved

The partnership between the OpenJS Foundation and Cloudflare is a major step forward for our community. This collaboration not only benefits the developers and users of these projects but also demonstrates how private corporations can effectively contribute to open-source initiatives that ultimately benefit them.
